SoCal life is so Cal!

Last night we went for Opium Hour at Starfish http://www.starfishlaguna.com/ We went with Ralph and Ann, our exchange partners from last year, as well as our friends Amy and Steve and our next-door neighbours, Diane and Tony who we met for the first time last night. We had lots of small plates as part of Opium Hour (happy hour or early bird to you, but we're in California now!!)
One thing that strikes me as a difference between eating out in Ireland and in California is how up-front everyone is about the price and the deal on offer, especially when dealing with the waiter. In Ireland I think we are more shy about asking the price, and what we're going to get for it. Here the waiter was careful to point out that this plate or that portion was small and that we'd need two between 4 of us etc etc. He wasn't shy about telling us that the Opium deals would be gone in 15 min and so to get on with our order! That's not a criticism, just an observation of a perceived difference.
The food was interesting and fun. My favourite was the lettuce cup with chicken, the ribs were really tasty too.
